Everything about education for Ukrainian refugees

In the Netherlands, attending school is mandatory for children aged 4 to 16. This page provides more information about the various types of education and school holidays.

Playgroup

  • Children aged 2 to 4 are welcome to attend a playgroup in Purmerend or Beemster.
  • This provision is open to all children residing in our municipality. Please note: this playgroup is not specifically intended for Ukrainian displaced persons; it is a general playgroup.
  • There are costs associated with the playgroup and part of these costs are borne by the parents. The amount of this contribution depends on the family’s collective income.
  • You may be eligible for a childcare allowance. Go to the Social Insurance Bank’s website to apply for this allowance

For more information about the playgroup and the financial options, go to the website of Child Care Purmerend or the Clup Welzijn website.

School holidays

Children in the Netherlands have five holidays per academic year. The dates of these holidays vary per region and per year. Purmerend is located in region Noord (north). For more information on school holidays, go to the website of the Government of the Netherlands.

Parents/caregivers are responsible for childcare during the holidays. Every summer, there are summer programmes for children in the various neighbourhoods. All children are invited to participate. For more information, ask the school or contact Clup Welzijn.

Schools do not offer childcare during the school holidays. Children usually do not go to camps either. There are camps for children, but you will have to pay for them. Children who are registered at an after-school care (BSO) facility can also go there during the holidays.
